House Appropriations Committee refuses to protect children born alive in Defense Appropriations bill

Yesterday the House Appropriations Committee considered the FY20 Defense Appropriations Bill.

During the mark-up, Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) offered an amendment to protect infants born alive after surviving an abortion attempt. The amendment requires recipients of federal funding under this bill, including facilities that receive TRICARE funding, to provide the same level of care to that survivor that any other child of the same gestational age would receive.

The amendment failed by a vote of 24-27. Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-GA) and Henry Cuellar (D-TX) joined the Republican Members in voting in favor of the Harris amendment.
